Games - The Beast

The Beast is the name given by fans to the alternate reality game created to promote the release of the movie A.I.. The game concerned itself primarily with the discovery of the reasons behind the murder of Evan Chan, one of its characters. The game began in earnest when posters for the movie were sent to a few online news organizations with "Evan Chan was murdered // Jeanine was the key" scrawled on them, and with the discovery of the fact that a "Jeanine Salla" was credited as a "Sentient Machine Therapist" in film's early trailers and print material. From there, the game interwove itself through all aspects of the film's promotional media, leading players across a network of websites, phone numbers, emails and live events, all the while exposing them to a series of increasingly mind-bending puzzles presented to them by the game's characters, set against the backdrop of the film's setting.

The Cloudmakers

Cloudmakers was the name of a Yahoo group created to tackle the game.

Design

The game was designed around, and to promote the film, A.I. By the end of the game, it had more than 3,000 members, and was generating over 100 messages a day in email traffic.

History

The game was being developed as it was played. While most players came to the plotlines after they had been solidified, the Cloudmakers group was constantly on the bleeding edge of the game. Therefore, pushing the game's developers, influencing the plot. Warnings and messages sent by Cloudmakers members to characters in the story regularly turned up in the plot, and designs/blueprints and databases produced by the group were referenced by and even featured on in-game websites and magazines.

The game developers had sketched out a large number of possible scenarios, not all of which could be developed; in some instances, Cloudmakers members determined (through their investigations) which parts of the game world became part of the story.
