In The Legend of Zelda Link plays a haunting melody on his Whistle. In the Overworld, this summons a whirlwind which can wipe out enemies, or carry Link to a dungeon entrance he’s already visited (it’s not random but it’s tricky to control). It’s also used to open one dungeon. In the Underworld, certain enemies are vulnerable to the sound of the Whistle being played.
- Buttons: B (when the Whistle is selected)
In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, playing the Flute will get Link past certain obstacles on the Overworld Map.

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, playing the Flute will awaken and subsequently summon the original owner’s Duck, who will fly Link to one of several spots around Hyrule at his command.
- Buttons: Y (when the Flute is selected)
In The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Link can play his red Ocarina before he learns any Songs, but he will just produce a flat, tuneless melody.

In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, Link receives a Strange Flute. It plays an echoing tune, which eventually serves to summon one of three pets Link can bond with.
- Buttons: A or B (when Strange/Moosh’s/Ricky’s/Dimitri’s Flute is selected)
In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Link can play the Ocarina of Wind to summon a bird called Zeffa, who will take him to any Wind Crest he’s uncovered.

Ballad of Gales
When Link finds and defeats Cyclos in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, he will learn to conduct the cranky deity’s Ballad of Gales. From anywhere on the open sea, Link can summon cyclones which will transport him to key locations in the Great Sea. This is the only way to get inside the larger of the Mother & Child Isles and meet the Fairy Queen.

Ballad of the Wind Fish
Once Link has the Ocarina in Link’s Awakening, he can approach Marin while she’s singing to learn to play the Ballad of the Wind Fish. If he plays it at the top of Mt. Tamaranch, in front of the Wind Fish’s egg, he will be accompanied by any Sirens’ Instruments he has collected. When he has all eight, the song will cause the egg to open... It can also provoke a reaction from a certain walrus after he’s been moved, and destroy Pols Voices.
