The Maryland Zoo (formerly The Baltimore Zoo) is a located in Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, Maryland. Home to over 2,000 animals, the zoo is generally held to be the third oldest zoological park in the United States, having opened in 1876. Until the 1980's, it remained one of America's smallest and dingiest zoos; massive renovation projects in the 1990's, however, have turned the zoo into a larger and much more attractive facility. In 2004, the zoo was struck by financial problems, and was forced to reduce its collection size by closing the old part of the zoo (the Main Valley) and its Reptile House. The reptiles, as well as gibbons and snow leopards, were sent on loan to other zoos and aquariums. Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is active in many conservation programs, notably the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Program and Project Golden Frog; it is the zoo that breeds the greatest number of African black footed penguins. It also helps rehabilitate local wildlife, especially bald eagles. The zoo is divided into three regions:

Polar Bear Watch: Home to famous polar bears Magnet and Alaska, as well as Ravens, Snowy Owls, and Arctic Foxes. Guests can view bears from underwater windows, or from the windows of a massive Tundra Buggy.

Children Zoo (Maryland Wilderness/Farmyard): Displaying animals of the Old Line State, visitors can watch otters swim over their heads, jump on lily pads, explore a cave, or climb into giant bird nests. In the farmyard, a variety of rare domestic breeds can be touched; the highlight is a corrall of friendly African pygmy goats that kids can enter.

African Journey: The largest area of the zoo, the African journey displays elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and antelope, as well as the three African big cats. Also featured are unexpected animals, such as okapi and African (yes, African) penguins. The Chimpanzee Forest houses not only the zoo's prolific chimp troop, but also monkeys, lemurs, and crocodiles.
