They Hunger is a single player horror based mod of Valve's first-person shooter Half-Life. It was released by Neil Manke's Black Widow Games in three episodes, the first in 1999, the second in 2000, and the final installment in 2001. In the first episode, the player takes the role of a troubled writer who has gone to a country retreat to work on his next masterpiece. However, the player soon hears news over the radio of 'strange atmospheric phenomena', and he quickly find himself fighting for survival against hordes of zombies. To make things worse, there are also zombie police officers who are still capable of using weapons and equipment, and prove to be a constant threat (as well as a source of ammunition). As the zombie officer unlocks your cell door you stand in the belief that there is no escape from your inevitable demise. Perhaps you could ellude the one zombie officer, but there were others waiting, just in case, includeing the zombie sherif. All seemed lost. However at the last moment you hear a voice shouting from outside, and then suddenly an explosion obliders the entire cell wall, allowing you to make your escape. You see a policeman operating a tank turret. He quickly drops down and greets you, warning you that the entire area is flooded with zombies.
After fighting through monster-filled sewers, the player finds himself in Rivendale Asylum for the Criminally Insane, run by a mad scientist who is creating zombies from his patients. The player blows up the asylum and loses consciousness.They Hunger 3: Rude Awakening
The final episode opens as the player awaken to find himself in a hospital. A little exploration reveals that this place, too, is full of zombies, and the player's fight continues. The player also finds himself hunted by Marines, apparently called in to attempt to contain the situation. In the end, the player must battle a mad scientist and the zombie sheriff responsible for the mayhem.They Hunger: Lost Souls
A They Hunger mod using the Source engine is currently under development. The full title is now They Hunger: Lost Souls, replacing the rumored temporary name They Hunger: Source. Black Widow has also revealed that they intend to make the new chapter available as a commercial mod, presumably distributed over Steam.Others
