Games - Three Corridors

Three Corridors, commonly known as 3C, is an Aeon of Strife-style custom map created for the game Warcraft 3 (by Blizzard Entertainment
).

Origin

The Three Corridors map was originally released by iLPal and ZigZagEr shortly after the release of Warcraft III (July 2002). It immediately found popularity on the Kali game browser service for its simplicity and replayability. The original Three Corridors were developed until version 3.3, when the creators stopped updating it and released an unprotected version of the map that anyone could edit. Many map makers soon picked it up, making many new versions of the initial concept.

Overview

The game is played by two teams, the main objective is to destroy the enemy castle. As the name suggests, the map is divided into three corridors. The corridors merge on both sides into the castle area which is protected by towers, the closer you get to the castle, the stronger are the towers. At the beginning of each corridor, except the middle one, there is a barracks. The barracks and the castle each spawn waves of units into their corresponding corridor, the units of both sides meet at the middle of each corridor and fight each other. Usually 10 players play the game, 5 on each side. Their job is to go into the corridors with their heros, kill enemy units, heros and eventually to destroy the enemy castle. Each unit, tower or hero killed gives a bounty of gold. With gold you can buy several different items. Most items, tomes for example, are used to make your hero stronger. If your hero dies, you have to wait some time to revive, 3 minutes is a standard, but it depends on the map version. When you are dead you can't earn any gold and you don't gain any experience. As a team gets strong enough it's job is to attack an enemy barracks, freeing one corridor from enemy units and thus lowering the defense of the enemy, making it voulnerable to a second attack to the other barracks or castle.

Versions of Three Corridors

Tournament Edition (TE)

TE, created by Stradius, was the first variant of 3C to be released after iLPal and ZigZagEr's abandonment. It initially strived to fix rather marked problems with balance within 3C 3.3, primarily the weakening of the two absurdly strong and imbalanced heroes, Mountain King and Grom Hellscream. Development of this version rapidly progressed (i.e. in one night) from its initial stages to TE3.1, after which Stradius disappeared, making no further updates.

TE was the most popular choice on Kali and it later became a founding stone to many other 3 Corridors maps. The map had a long life span, but balance issues slowly became obvious. Players started exploiting them, making the game unplayable, as an answer RE was made. In contrast to maps that came after it, based on hero balance, TE was based on side balance. The game was usually played with the same 10 to 12 heros, despite having several more heros from which to pick, developing strict roles for each of the heros. For example, Dreadlord(also known as the sleeper) was not a strong hero compared to Mountain King, but was crucial for the balance of the game itself. TE was usually played with Paladin, Priestess of the Moon, Keeper of the Groove, Ranger and Mountain King on holy side versus Archimonde, Lich, Dreadlord, Death Knight and Tauren Chieftain on evil. Each of the heros posessing unique roles that made the predefined game style work. Knowledge of the game was necessary for the game to be enjoyed and an unexperienced player would usually mean the downfall of his team, making TE very unfriendly to new players. As a result TE was played by the elite, while the others usually chose a different, friendlier, version.

At it's peak, TE held a tourney on Kali on which 32 teams signed up, each team having at least 5 players.

Lapdance Edition (LE)

After the release of the Frozen Throne expansion, it was found that many of the old Reign of Chaos (RoC) maps were unplayable due to the vast amount of balance changes introduced by Blizzard Entertainment
. Seeking to replicate the gameplay of TE in the new Frozen Throne environment, a player named Lapdance created his own version based on it, called Lapdance Edition (LE). This preserved the fundamentals of TE while incorporating some of the new heroes, units and items introduced by the new expansion. However, it was only adopted for play on Kali by the Australian, Hong Kong and Singaporean players, with the North American and European players instead opting to play the UCC Legends edition.

Lapdance's first release of LE was marked as LE3.92, which incorporated all of the new heroes introduced in the Frozen Throne expansion. He then continued delevopment, making several minor changes until his release of the unprotected (most maps played on Kali were protected from being edited by others) LE3.96. Several other players took advantage of the lack of map protection and created versions 3.97 and 3.98. Lapdance then decided he didn't want to put in any more effort into editing it, after which the creater of 3.98, IntuitioN, took over control of the map, immediately releasing LE4.02.
