| Torchic (known as アチャモ Achamo in Japanese) is one of the fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. Torchic is most famous for being one of the three Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of their adventure in the Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald versions of the Pokémon series. In all three versions, Torchic appears as a small, clumsy chicken, with yellowish feathers and a orange body. It is often seen hopping randomly behind its trainer, the term given to any character in the Pokémon world who collects and battle Pokémon. Although its appearance gives a innocent and harmless image, it has the ability to spit scorching flames at enemies from within the pit of its stomach. The drawing and sprite design of Torchic was created by Ken Sugimori's team for its 2003 release on the Gameboy Advance. Many gamers have criticized the Advanced Generation artwork as a whole, since Ken Sugimori, the designer of all of the first and second generation Pokémon, instead lead the design team, resulting in a more naturalistic view to the Pokémon, compared to the anthropormorphistic style of the Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Gold and Silver games. CharacteristicsTorchic as a species are universally playful, and are covered with a fluffy coat of down. Its small wings are useless for flying with, much like a chicken's, and as it evolves into its later forms, Combusken and Blaziken, claws slowly protrude from the ends of its wings, making it a vicious fighter, rather than a aerial battler. In any given environment, Torchic dislikes darkness because it prevents it to see its surroundings, regardless of its proficiency with fire techniques. Torchic stays with its Pokémon trainer, following behind with unsteady, hopping steps, as it learns to walk properly before its legs develop. It has a sac deep within its stomach, in which churns a super-heated fire, allowing it to give literal warm hugs to its trainers. This power also serves as its ammunition in battles. If attacked, it strikes back by spitting fireballs over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, often at times leaving the foe scorched black. In the Pokémon video gamesOne of few things common to all the Pokémon games, spanning from Pokémon Red and Blue on the Nintendo Game Boy to the un-released Nintendo DS game, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, is the choice between one of three different Pokémon at the start of the player's adventures, often labelled "Starter Pokémon" as a group. Protagonists can choose from either a Water-type, Fire-type or a Grass-type, indigenous to the region. (An exception to the rule is Pokémon Yellow, a remake of the original games that follows the story of the Pokémon anime, where players are given a Pikachu, an Electric mouse famous for being the mascot of the Pokémon media franchise.)Torchic is the Fire-type choice in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Pokémon Emerald, for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and choosing it as your starter Pokémon is considered as a steeper difficulty curve than choosing Treecko, the Grass-type choice, or Mudkip, the Water-type choice. This is primarily because the first Hoenn Gym-leader, Roxanne, uses Rock Pokémon, a definitive trait of certain Pokémon, such as Geodude, that gives them a natural resistance against Fire attacks. However, Torchic is the only Fire-type Pokémon available between Littleroot Town, where Pokémon Trainers can obtain Torchic from Professor Birch, and Fiery Path, a mountainous region around a violent, active volcano. Since Grass-type Pokémon, such as Oddish, Sunkern and Shroomish, are very popular early in all incarnations of the series, Torchic has a definitive type advantage against these Pokémon.
