=The Krogoth, Overview=
'The Krogoth is a playable unit from the expansion pack for the original Total Annihilation game. It is widely credited as the most powerful ground unit in the game.'OriginsThe Total Annihilation game expansion pack The Core Contingency added 75 extra units to the game (not counting third party downloadables). Arguably the most powerful of these new units was the Krogoth; a unit exclusive to the Core, supposedly fabricated to ensure the Arm's destruction.Statistics
The Krogoth is heavily armored, and has the largest footprint of any of the game's KBOTs. Approximately 7 nuclear missiles are required to take it down. The Krogoth also requires 29489 metal and 116664 energy to construct, with a correspondingly large construction time. It can only be constructed by the Krogoth Gantry, a building in turn only constructable by the Advanced Construction KBOT. Due to the fact that units in TA are scaled down to fit on screen, the actual size of the Krogoth is very misleading. Sources indicate that a Krogoth is as large as a skyscraper. DebutThe Krogoth made its debut in a bonus mission in the Core Contingency designated "Krogoth Encounter", which although surmountable, usually seems impossible at the first playthrough. Even though the Krogoth debuts in a mission set before the Core Contingency, when playing for the Core a gamer still can construct one in the last mission of the Core Contingency Campaign.StrategyStrategy concerning the Krogoth is limited; since it is so destructive and so powerful, after it is completed Core players can often achieve an easy victory by walking the Krogoth into an enemy base with the +shootall command activated. The overwhelming power of the Krogoth can initially be very fun to use; however, the lack of play balance can spoil the game if a player has more than one in play at a time. The best defense is usually preventing it from being built in the first place.Defending against the KrogothLarge numbers of Punishers (or the Arm's counterpart defense the Guardian) can defeat the Krogoth. Several of these can take down a Krogoth in a matter of minutes, and because of the Punisher's long range, the Krogoth will not immediately destroy them. As with all units, the Krogoth cannot survive a direct hit from a Commander's D-Gun, although getting close enough to take advantage of this is a risky proposition. The Krogoth is also of much more limited use on water maps, as it can neither enter the water, nor be transported by any of the transportation units.CounterpartsThe Krogoth, which set the initial standard for destruction in TA:CC, now has become almost overshadowed by third party expansion units (some with even larger footprints), such as the Kryptor (a 3rd party Arm counterpart to the Krogoth), the Orcone, and the Karganeth.See also: Total Annihilation [ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Total Annihilation: Core Contingency - Krogoth ] | Searches on eBay |
