Games - Unglued

Unglued is the name of a Magic: The Gathering
expansion set, the first silver-bordered, not tournament-legal expansion set released. It came out in August 1998. Its symbol is a cracked egg, whose shape resembles the letter U. Among the themes of the set were chicken, dice rolling and multiplayer Magic games.

History

Unglued was originally conceived by then-Lead Magic designer Joel Mick and fellow designer Bill Rose. Having helped in the creation of many of the expansion sets of the time, they began talking about cards which were cut from the expansion or were unplayable, based on the rules of the game. Thinking this through, they conceptualized an expansion where all the cards had no place in serious games.

Unglued was not entirely a commercially successful expansion, but the unique basic land cards - the only cards from the set legal in tournaments - were and still are valuable. The set also developed a cult following among casual Magic fans, and it was far later when a sequel to the set, Unhinged
, was announced.

Notable cards

  • ' - Forces target player to get you a drink.
  • ' - A creature so large that it spans 2 cards.
  • ' - the alpha card Chaos Orb has to be thrown onto the table and destroys everything it touches; an urban legend involves a tournament player tearing it into shreds and throwing them all over the table, thus destroying everything. Chaos Confetti must be torn into pieces to be used, and thrown over the table
  • ' - The classic Black Lotus's big brother, it is stronger but has to be torn into pieces to be used
  • //// - 5 cards which do an effect in this game, and then repeat the effect in your next game with the same opponent. They also make a funny limerick with the flavor text, if read in order.
In the duel and takin a lickn... The wizard exclaimed, "I'm no chicken..." "I'm facing defeat..." "But next we meet..." "You're in for a nasty butt-kickin'."
  • ' - The more you lose to your opponent, the larger Gus gets.
  • ' - This innocent looking mouse in a cheery winter scene poked fun on past cards whose name didn't match the art (like Richard Thomas' Hyalopterous Lemure). It also made reference to the company's then policy on demonic and satanic content.
  • ' - A humorous poke at the policies of the DCI
regarding restrictions on cards, this card allows you to ban one card (other than basic lands) for a whole match. It was also the only card (currently) whose art was drawn by Mark Rosewater
    .
  • ' - Opponent beating you down? Take his place, and make him take your place.
  • ' - The personification of one of the three notable Magic player types ('Timmy', 'Johnny', and 'Spike').
  • ' - A spell so confusing that even the designers cannot understand it.

Unglued secret message

All 94 cards in the Unglued set each had a single word printed on the bottom of the card. Alone these single words made little to no sense but when combined in proper numerical order with other cards in the series they would spell out a secret message.

"Here are some cards that didn't make it to print: Socks of Garfield
, Hot Monkey Love, Colonel's Secret Recipe, Squee's Play, Banned in France, Spoon, Disrobing Scepter, Butt Wolf, Lotus Roach, Sesame Efreet, Needless Reminder Text, Chicken Choker, Clockwork Doppelganger, Henway, HELP I'M TRAPPED IN CARTA MUNDI, Mad Cow, Poke, Lord of Wombats, Gratuitous Babe Art, Brother's War Bonds, Dwarven Kickboxer, Mickey's Drunk, Pact with the Wastes, CoP:BO, Urza'sChia® Pet, Thallid Shooter, Shoelace, When Chihuahuas Attack, Wall of Cookies, Kobold Ninja, Mucusaur, Kjeldoran Outhouse, Bear in the Woods, Dental Thrull, Flavatog, Cereal Killer."
