Games - Unown

Unown(アンノーン Annon in Japan, Icognito in Germany and Zarbi in France) is a fictional, unidentified being in the Pokémon
franchise.

"Unown" is a new spelling of the Japanese version of its name, Anon, meaning anonymous. It is also a misspelling of the word "unknown" (meaning lack of knowledge), and Icognito is a misspelling of "incognito", meaning discreet.

Characteristics

Unown is among the most enigmatic Pokémon species ever discovered. It is a Pokémon that, whenever it appears amongst locations that are themselves laden with mystery, is never seen without the presence of other Unown in the area. Each individual Unown appears to be a floating hieroglyphic symbol comprised of a black substance that is itself unknown, and the configuration of its body seems to vary between each individual. But however it is configured, it is vaguely in the shape of a romanic letter. Common to each Unown, though, is a large, flat, perfectly circular, unblinking eye in the center.

There are a total of twenty-eight variations of these hieroglyphic Pokémon. Each variation somewhat resembles a letter of the alphabet. What is known about these beings is that they have the amazing ability to create new realities and dimensions with their particular brand of psychic powers. They appear to have synchronized minds as well. Sometimes a whole swarm of them appear and act in perfect unison to create psychic effects beyond imagining, including projecting illusory beings such as other Pokémon that seem genuinely corporeal to the touch.

There are many questions about the Unown that scientists strive to discover the answer to, but may turn up fruitless. It is not known how the Unown were created, and for what purpose, nor are the implications for their existence, which may have ties about the creation of the world. Could these Pokémon be tools of a cosmic force for reasons that may not be fathomable? Whatever the answers to any of the above subjects may turn out to be, Unown is a Pokémon that lives up to its foreboding name.

Information

Introduced in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, each of the initial 26 variations of Unown represented the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Each one was in a shape that was at least vaguely similar to each letter.

To facilitate knowing which varieties of Unown the Trainer has caught, an "Unown Mode" can be added to their Pokédex
in the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions. Included in the Unown Mode is a word associated with each Unown. The word each Unown is associated with starts with the same letter of the Unown, e.g. Unown-F is associated with the word "Find."

These Pokémon were originally only catchable in the Ruins of Alph, a mysterious archeological site in Johto
which only became more mysterious with the addition of many hidden secret chambers in Pokémon Crystal. They also cause interference on the ingame radio, noticeable only in the Ruins of Alph on Frequency 13.5.

Upon catching all 26 in Pokémon Gold or Silver, any player who owned a Gameboy Printer earned the ability to type in Unown Font and then print out on paper.

The words associated with the original 26 Unown are as follows: ANGRY, BEAR, CHASE, DIRECT, ENGAGE, FIND, GIVE, HELP, INCREASE, JOIN, KEEP, LAUGH, MAKE, NUZZLE, OBSERVE, PERFORM, QUICKEN, REASSURE, SEARCH, TELL, UNDO, VANISH, WANT, XXXXX, YIELD, and ZOOM. The first letter of these words go in order with the alphabet, but nobody knows why.

In terms of battling prowess, though, Unown is purely a novelty. All its stats are below average, and it wields one single attack: Hidden Power. It varies between each Unown variation in element. Unown is essentially meant to be a Pokémon to treat as a whole sub-class of Pokémon to catch on its own.

In each chamber except the unown shrine (The place with the statues), there is a sliding panel, plus at the back of each chamber there is a strange place where there are unown words. The Unown words are: 'Light'- use Flash, 'Mystic' equip Mystic Water to the first pokemon in party- regardless of type, 'Escape'- use an escape rope then re-enter the room, and ho-oh- place Ho-oh at the front of your party. once you have done all of that PLUS the sliding puzzle to form either Ho-oh, Omanite, Aerodactyl, or Kabuto, you will open a new chamber where there are four items to colect. once you open up the chambers you can fall down the hole to read a message by the Unowns, telling us why they are chasing Suicune. (as seen in the beginning movie)

The new varieties

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, two brand new variations of Unown were introduced but remained uncatchable in the game. They are, however, catchable in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The two new variations represent an exclamation point (!) and a question mark (?). Both of these variations are extremely rare. It is also noted that both have their eyes only half open.
