VG Cats is a webcomic written and drawn by Scott Ramsoomair. Published once a week on its own web site, it features the adventures of a pair of anthropomorphic cats, who often play the roles of characters in popular video games. More recently, the comic has also parodied many newer video games, as well as prominent figures in the gaming world, such as Jack Thompson. Strips are usually presented in a large format and in full color. The first strip was published on September 9, 2001.Characters
VG Cats is not a storyline-based comic. Nonetheless, there are quite a few characters that are staples of the comic. Recurring characters in VG Cats include:
- Leo Leonardo, a male cat with grey fur, enthusiastic but credulous. Is perpetually happy, despite his tendency of getting hurt. Named after one of the author's cats. Leo is typically the more foolhardy of the two cats. For some reason, there is a bounty of $90,000,000 on his head. While he usually projects a general air of idiocy (which typically results in Aeris' wrath), he has shown signs of a deeper intelligence, or at least marginal quantities of common sense-it's likely that he's not so much stupid as he doesn't tend to think things through, or that when he does think things through he comes to what is inevitably the wrong conclusion.
:Introduced: Sept. 9, 2001, .
- Aeris, a female cat with pink fur, also named after one of the author's cats, who might be named after the character Aeris Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII. Though easily the most sensible character, she has a quick temper and little patience for the foolishness that surrounds her, and is almost always upset with Leo... or any of the characters as she is, some would say, the only sensible (or even sane) member of the cast. Almost always the unsuccessful voice of reason, she enjoys writing yaoi fanfiction () and MMORPGs (). Aeris doesn't seem to be good at fighting games and gets irritated when Leo beats her. (). She is also left-handed
:Introduced: Sept. 4, 2001, (The comic supposedly started 5 days later, but this is the date attributed to strip 2)
- Krug, Lord of the Unpleasant, a horned red demon of limited intelligence and a childlike demeanor, though he can be violent at times and admittedly enjoys the taste of suffering.
:Introduced: (as the new sidekick for cross-over character, Tycho, from Penny Arcade)
- Pantsman, the alter ego of the author as an incompetent superhero who conceals his identity by wearing underpants on his head (example: ). He's a fan of Law & Order () and disdains CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ().
:Introduced:
- Johnny Evilguy, a greedy and unscrupulous antagonist named after an example character in the Neverwinter Nights scenario creation guide. He appears to be the proprietor of a card shop where Ternaldo occasionally drops by to bore him senseless with tales of Yu-Gi-Oh collection. He's also seems obsessed with testicles, and ate one in his introduction strip. He supposedly committed suicide in . But it has not been proven.
:Introduced:
:Finale (?):
- The late Dr. FG Hobo, an alley-dwelling lunatic given to telling absurd, rambling stories in an accent produced by copious quantities of drink (quote: "It's a fnuckin' tater! Lay off da hooch!"). The author announced that Dr. Hobo is gone for good, but later the news post concerning this was edited, leading to speculation that Dr Hobo might one day return.
:Introduced:
:Finale:
- Major Payne, possibly the most perverted character in VG Cats. Was kicked out of the army for being a masochist. Introduced: .
- Ternaldo, a collectible card game fan oblivious to the finer points of social interaction. He mostly resembles a Galka from Final Fantasy XI. Ternaldo is often used to represent the ubiquitous newbie or neophyte in gaming circles, someone who is overenthusiastic and completely clueless. He has an infatuation with pocky.
