| Venusaur (フシギバナ Fushigibana in Japanese, Bisaflor in Germany, Florizarre in France and 이상해꽃 Isanghaekkoch in Korean) is one of the fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon media franchise - a series of video games, anime, manga, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. It is #003 in the National Pokédex and is a dual-type Grass and Poison Pokémon. Venusaur’s name is thought to be a derivation of “venom” or “Venus” (as in the Venus flytrap) and the Greek word “sauros”, meaning “lizard” (as in the word “dinosaur”). Its Japanese name, フシギバナ (Fushigibana), can be construed as a combination of the words ふしぎ (fushigi, “mystery”) and はな (hana, “flower”). Its German name Bisaflor comes from the German der Bisam and the Latin flora. CharacteristicsVenusaur is a large, reptilian animal that walks on all fours. Like its predecessors, Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, Venusaur has a plant on its back . At this stage of its development, the plant has bloomed into an enormous flower (vaguely resembling Rafflesia arnoldii) which it uses to collect energy from sunlight, giving off a pleasant fragrance in the process. Because of this, Venusaur usually moves around in an effort to follow the sun; furthermore, it is more powerful in summer when it is able to absorb more sunlight. The fragrance emitted from its brilliantly-colored flower becalms foes in battle, as well as humans. In the Pokémon video gamesVenusaur are not found in the wild, and can only be obtained through trade or by evolving a Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur is only available in the original games and their remakes, and as a prize in Pokémon Stadium. Because of its rarity, Venusaur is highly sought-after by Pokédex completionists.Venusaur’s statistics are all average or higher, allowing it to make effective use of the various techniques it is able to harness. Among its greatest assets are its Special stats, both of which have a high base stat of 100. Venusaur is a dangerous opponent to underestimate, as those new to battle are often dismayed to find out. Even though Venusaur best-known as a Grass type one its main damaging moves is the poison-type Sludge Bomb. This move receives STAB, but unfortunately relies on Venusaur’s relatively weak attack attribute. For this reason, many Venusaur trainers prefer to rely on its powerful Giga Drain. Venusaur are commonly used as “sunnybeamers” – Pokémon that use the Sunny Day and Solarbeam combo (and possibly Morning Sun/Moonlight and Synthesis). Venusaur is appreciated for learning many popular and useful moves like Double team, Sleep Powder, Sunny Day, Synthesis, Leech Seed, Giga Drain, Toxic, Attract, and Magical Leaf. It can also learn Frenzy Plant from the Cape Brink move tutor in FireRed and LeafGreen, making it of only 4 Pokémon which may know the powerful Grass-type move. Venusaur makes a cameo appearance as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and sometimes emerges from thrown Pokéballs. In the Pokémon animeIn the first season of the Pokémon animé, Ash Ketchum and company come across a secret garden where Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur in episode 51, “Bulbasaur’s Mysterious Garden”. A Venusaur protects this garden against everything except evolving Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. In the Advanced Challenge season, there is an episode titled “Grass Hysteria” which involves a Venusaur guarding a forest of Grass Pokémon. It accepts Ash and May, and later encourages a Bulbasaur to join May. In the 9th season in Japan, a Venusaur uses Frenzy Plant, the attack’s anime debut. In Pokémon: The First Movie, Mewtwo clones a Venusaur named Bruteroot, and uses the clone (along with clones of Charizard and Blastoise) to defeat the trainers it has invited to its keep. Mewtwo and the clones eventually give up on conquest and retire to an undisclosed location, but they reappear in the sequel, Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns.
