Games - Warpath

Warpath, developed by Dan Samuel of Synthetic-Reality, is a shareware 4X
real-time multi-player game where up to 8 players race to explore, mine, colonize, develop, and conquer the galaxy. Although designed primarily as a multi-player game, it can also be played solo with robot friends and enemies. These robots can also take sides in a multiplayer game. The shareware version allows 20 free hours of gameplay before requiring an activation code.

Currently, there are three versions of Warpath: Warpath Classic, Warpath 97, and Warpath 21st Century. Warpath Classic was the original version of the game and differs greatly from the other two versions. The game area is half-size and only has half of the technologies of the other two versions. Warpath Classic is now freeware. Warpath 97 was a major upgrade to Warpath Classic adding new technology and expanding on the game area. Warpath 21st Century is the latest manifestation of Warpath. The game is still in Beta testing and is very similar to Warpath 97. Both Warpath 97 and Warpath 21st Century are shareware.

Gameplay

The game screen is a galaxy divided into 8 quadrants containing 16 planets. Each player begins in a personal quadrant. Each quadrant is surrounded by an energy barrier that causes damage if not destruction to ships.

Before the game begins each player selects a Path to follow: Green Path of Peace or Red Path of War. All players under each path are automatically and permanently allied for the game. Game conditions are also set before the game.

When the game begins, each player controls a ship that can travel through space to orbit different planets. Every planet has a colored aura that indicates which Path the planet follows. Players must persuade neutral (yellow) planets to join their own Path and colonize uninhabited planets (white). Uninhabited planets may also be mined for ore to make a profit.

Technology is broken into 10 different "Tek Levels." A player's Tek Level is defined by the population that is under the influence of that player's path. The greater the population, the greater the Tek Level. Higher Tek Levels allow for more powerful weapons and tools.

Players can fight eachother in space as well as kill planetary populations. In a certain gameplay modes, players may adjust a planet's atmosphere which is required in order to colonize a planet and can also be used as a weapon to kill an enemy planet's population.

Game ends when all players under one Path have lost all their ships or planets.

This is one of four games on synthetic-reality.com to feature MIX support, giving players full control of running their own servers deciding who they want to be on a server, and kicking or banning players they don't want. Although Warpath's MIX support is very primitive compared to it's cousins Well of Souls and Arcadia, it works well enough to connect a game.

Storyline

Warpath takes place in the distant future of a galaxy not unlike our own. In this galaxy, several empires have evolved, spread out and discovered they are not alone. After a period of conflict, these empires settled down into separate quadrants. The peace between the quadrants is maintained by an artificial energy barrier that separates the quadrants. This barrier was designed to destroy any ship which attempted to leave its home quadrant. Eventually, technology is discovered that allows passage, though dangerous, through the barriers.

With the passage of ships across the barrier, there comes a major change in the galaxy: the Path. It becomes known that all philosophical and economic pursuits can be divided into two paths: The Path of Peace represented by green and The Path of War represented by red. As news of the path spread around the galaxy, some planets began following one path or the other while others were lost in indecision between the paths.
