The Wilderness makes up the top half of the central part of the RuneScape map. At one time, the Wilderness was the only venue that allowed player vs player combat (player-killing or PKing). Limited player-vs-player combat is now enabled elsewhere in the Runescape world, but the Wilderness remains a popular area for PKing.LocationThe Wilderness, frequently referred to as "the wildy" or "the wild", is a large area of map located in the northern part of RuneScape. The closest cities to the edge of the Wilderness are Varrock and Edgeville. The town of Burthorpe is also close to the Wilderness' edge.Commonly visited areas within the Wilderness include the Mage Arena and the Abyss, which are both common spots for players to camp and attack. To end up in the Wilderness, players usually go north from Varrock (to go directly in to the Wilderness) or northwest from Varrock (to get to Edgeville). Many clans meet up in Edgeville before going on pking trips or clan wars. Wilderness levelAs players go further north, the Wilderness level increases. The level of the Wilderness shows a player what level player opponents they can engage in combat above and below their own combat level. For example, if a player is in a level 50 Wilderness, they can fight people 50 levels below or 50 levels above their current combat level. The highest level of Wilderness on the free world is 48, where a wall spanning the entire length of the Wilderness prevents anyone from proceeding any further north. The highest level of Wilderness on the members world is 56. The gate has 2 entrances, which can only be opened if playing on a members-only server. By the western-most entrance there are ice giants. If a player is going to kill another player, it is best to pick a player who is only a few levels lower than you. If you pick a low level player the risk is much greater because you have to go deeper into the wilderness. The most effective way to playerkill (often referred to as PK) is to be a mage because, despite popular belief, magic is probably the most powerful attack style in the game. Player killingThe Wilderness has great rewards, but also great risks. Players who attack first, or kill someone, are punished with a skull shown fixed above their head. If a player is killed without a skull over their head, they will lose all but their 3 most valuable items unless the "Protect Item" prayer is used to save a 4th item. If the player dies with the skull above their head, they will lose all of their items, unless the "Protect Item" prayer is active, in which case they will keep their single most valuable item. The skull goes away after 20 minutes of peace, or after the player dies. Killing another player in this area is referred to as "pking" (player killing). Some areas of the Wilderness only allow 1-on-1 battles, whilst other areas (known as multi-combat areas/zones) allow combat between multiple players and potentially huge team wars. These multi-combat zones are also used for clan wars, with multiple players fighting one another at once.NPC'sThere are also many attackable non-playable characters (NPCs) in the Wilderness. Unlike most aggressive NPCs, NPCs in the Wilderness (with the exception of Rogues) are all aggressive and ignore the player's combat level. Many of the most powerful creatures in RuneScape reside in the Wilderness. One example of this is the King Black Dragon, whose lair can be accessed via a ladder in the "Lava Maze". The Chaos Elemental can also be found in the Wilderness.[ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Wilderness (RuneScape) ] | Searches on eBay
