Before the events of the War of the Three Hammers, the Wildhammer Dwarves were part of the Dwarven nation of Khaz Modan and lived peacefully with the Bronzebeard and Dark Iron clans. However, when King Anvilmar died and the War of the Three Hammers broke out, they engaged in the three way war with the Bronzebeard and Dark Irons for control of the nation.

As the war concluded, with the Bronzebeard the victors, both the Dark Irons and Wildhammers left Khaz Modan for pastures new. While the Dark Irons plotted, the Wildhammers set up a home in The Wetlands in Grim Batol but were later forced by Thaurissan to leave and have since set up home at Aerie Peak in The Hinterlands
