Xan is the name of a fictional character in the Baldur's Gate series of Dungeons & Dragons
computer role-playing games created by Bioware. He is an enchanter of the Greycloak clan of elves from Evereska, who serves as a non-player character who can assist the player's character in Baldur's Gate. Xan is voiced by Jeff Bennett.

Xan is one of the characters who appears in both the Baldur's Gate games and the novelisations of the series by Philip Athans.

Character in the games

Introduced in Baldur's Gate, he is held prisoner in the Nashkel mines, which is one of the early key locations of the game. When the player's character encounters him, he is unarmed and severely injured, and if he is allowed to journey along with the player character, he will reveal himself as a pessimistic travel mate, with negative comments on failure and mild surprise at success. He is a very depressed elven enchanter mage, who wields the powerful mêlée weapon Moonblade, a family heirloom that he alone can wield. In order to put the blade to use, he needs to close to his enemies, but as his constitution is extremely low, rendering him very weak to physical harm, he must use a good deal of his magical spells to protect him from damage before battle.

In Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, he serves as a guide in the introductory tutorial, but he is not encountered during gameplay.

Character in the novels

Xan is encountered by Abdel Adrian and accompanies the group, but is killed by monstrous spiders.

Trivia

Xan is mentioned in Icewind Dale, in a journal found on an elven corpse.
