Games - Xinetd

xinetd is an open source daemon on many Unix systems that manages Internet services. It is a more secure extension to inetd.

xinetd has access control mechanisms, extensive logging capabilities, the ability to make services available based on time, can place limits on the number of servers that can be started, and has deployable defence mechanisms to protect against port scanners, among other things.

On Mac OS X
, this daemon is responsible for starting and maintaining various Internet-related services, including FTP and telnet. It is an extended form of inetd that offers enhanced security. It replaced inetd in Mac OS X v10.3
, and subsequently was replaced by launchd in Mac OS X v10.4
. However, xinetd has been retained for compatibility purposes.
