| 8mm is a 1999 mystery/thriller film, directed by Joel Schumacher about a private investigator (Nicholas Cage) who is hired to research the authenticity of an alleged snuff movie found in the vault of a recently deceased millionaire, which takes him to some sleazy environments. A direct-to-video sequel, 8mm 2, was released in 2005. PlotIn the film, Nicolas Cage plays private investigator Tom Welles, who normally caters to a high society crowd such as socialites and politicians. He lives an unexciting but mostly happy life with his wife Amy (Catherine Keener) and their infant daughter Cindy, and his (usually) non-dangerous job typically requires him to tail adulterers. Then one day Tom is contacted by Daniel Longdale (Anthony Heald), the attorney of wealthy widow Mrs. Christian (Myra Carter). She and Longdale found an 8 mm film depicting what appears to be the rape and murder of a teenage girl by a hulking man in a mask, in her late husband's safe. Tom believes the film, though ghastly, is fake, but Mrs. Christian wants him to verify this for certain once and for all. After looking through Missing Persons files Tom discovers the girl's name is Mary Ann Mathews (Jenny Powell), and learns from her distraught mother Janet (Amy Morton) that Mary Ann ran away to go to Hollywood to be a movie star. Armed with this information, Tom flies out to Hollywood where, with the help of a local named Max California (Joaquin Phoenix), he penetrates the underworld of illegal pornography, trying to discover who made the snuff film, and whether or not it is real. Contact with a sleazy "talent scout" named Eddie Poole (James Gandolfini) in turn leads Tom and Max to a shady movie director named Dino Velvet (Peter Stormare), whose violent and often pornographic films star a masked man named "Machine" (Chris Bauer) who is a dead-ringer for the man in the film from Mr. Christian's safe. Hoping to expose Velvet and Machine, Tom pretends to be a client interested in having a snuff film made. Velvet agrees, and arranges for him and Machine to meet Tom at an abandoned warehouse in New York City. Unfortunately, due to Poole and Longdale, Velvet now knows who Tom really is and what he is trying to do, and means to murder him and destroy the only copy of the film. Tom realizes that the movie indeed was authentic, and Longdale was hired to finance the project. After realizing that Longdale had been given $1,000,000 to make the film, Tom suspected that the movie would have been commissioned for considerable less and exposed Longdale's share in the project. After turning the tables on Longdale, Tom escapes the warehouse after Velvet and Longdale have simultaneously killed each other. Tom tracks down Poole and uncovers the shooting location of the film and kills Eddie after obtaining 'permission' to do so by the mother of the victim in the film. Tom then traces Machine back to his house through hospital records pretending to be a police officer. Tom finally removes the mask he was desperate to see beyond, is startled to find he does not 'look like a monster', and subsequently kills Machine.
