It is a film-within-a-film, with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon playing themselves as the egotistical lead and "co-lead" actors in an adaptation of the novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne.

In the United States, the film was released as Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story.
