Movies - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a 1994 wacky comedy movie, directed by Tom Shadyac. It starred Jim Carrey
, Courteney Cox
, Tone Loc, and Sean Young
, among others. Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino also appears in the movie.

The story follows the adventures of Ace Ventura, an eccentric detective who specializes in cases involving pet animals, in his search for "Snowflake", the missing mascot of the Miami Dolphins. Ace is easily identified by his bright Hawaiian shirts and Elvis Presley-inspired hairdo.

The film was largely responsible for launching Carrey's film career, following the exposure he received as part of the cast of the TV show In Living Color.

The movie had a successful sequel Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
(1995) starring Jim Carrey and directed by Steve Oedekerk
. In this, Ace Ventura investigates the disappearance of a rare white bat in Africa.

There was an Ace Ventura cartoon on CBS, which only ran one season. Most of the characters from the movie were retained, though none of the actors were. It was a goofy cartoon, more cartoony than the movies. Written by Seth MacFarlane
, the show was rife with toilet humor and many anachronisms (one episode centered around the Egyptian Mau an extinct breed of cat, when in fact, they are not), a foreshadowing of his own later series, Family Guy. Despite running in a time slot after The Mask
(another Jim Carrey-based cartoon) the series failed to gain strong viewership, especially despite a well-advertised crossover with the Mask. Ultimately, both Carrey cartoons were failures due to poor writing quality compared to many other cartoons of the time, and were cancelled.

Trivia

  • A scene in the movie where a monkey is jumping around Ace's apartment was used as the original Rally Monkey for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2000. As its popularity grew, Angel Stadium officials got a similar capuchin monkey for new Rally Monkey footage.
  • The idea for the "Ray Finkle" character missing a game winning field goal in the Super Bowl was inspired by Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood who actually missed a 48 yard game winning field goal in Super Bowl XXV. In the 1984 season the Miami Dolphins actually played in Super Bowl XIX with Dan Marino as their quarterback but they were defeated in a 38-16 rout by the San Francisco 49ers.
  • The death metal band Cannibal Corpse, performing "Hammer Smashed Face" from their Tomb of the Mutilated album, appeared for a brief cameo at Carrey's request.
  • Dan Marino appeared as himself in the film.
  • Ace Ventura's car is a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Character

The character of Ace was thought up by Carrey as a role that fit into his reputation on In Living Color.

In Other Cultures

In One Piece, a popular manga and anime in Japan, there's a character by the name Franky, who has the same hairstyle and hawaiian shirt. However, he has some influence from Popeye
as well.
