Alaipayuthey (2000) is a Tamil film directed by Mani Ratnam. Starring Madhavan and Shalini, the film explores the tensions of married life and the maturing of love. The film's score and soundtrack is composed by A. R. Rahman. The movie marked Mani Ratnam's return to his original style of movie making after a sequence of political movies. The film made its European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2001. Alaipayuthey was remade in Hindi as Saathiya

Plot

The story of the movie is simple and is mostly recollected in flashback by Karthik (Madhavan). Karthik and Shakthi (Shalini) fall in love against the backdrop of Madras and its electric trains and get married against the wishes of their parents. Most of the second half of the movie deals with the tensions and discontent of married life as contrasted with the exuberance of romantic love.

Despite the simplicity of the story, Mani Ratnam manages to hold the viewer's attention throughout with his trademark realistic style and a noticeable lack of the extreme melodrama that typically marks Indian movies. The love scenes have an undeniable cute quality to them. Throughout, the movie is well complemented by A R Rahman's music and background score and by P. C. Sriram's cinematography. The movie did well at the Tamil box office and re-established Mani Ratnam's reputation as a popular film maker.
