Movies - Amma Ariyan

Amma Ariyan or Report to Mother is a Malayalam film released in 1986 by the avant-garde filmmaker John Abraham from Kerala, India.

The story revolves around the incidents following the death of a young Naxalite upon whose death his friends travel to the village where his mother lives to inform her of the death of her only son.

The film is made in a documentary style. As a part of the technique of intertwining fact and fiction, the film maker shot many actual leftist political strikes that took place in Kerala during that time.

Amma Ariyan is considered to be a complex movie. Since its release in 1986, critics have from time to time read several layers of meaning into its obvious simple layer of story.

The incidents that led to the production of Amma Ariyan is as striking and deceptively simple as the story of the movie itself. A group of young friends of John Abraham who wanted to make it into a “people's movie” went around their village from house to house and collected the fund needed for the production of the movie.

= = Story = = “Purushan sets out for Delhi for his research, promising his mother to write to her wherever he is. The film is in the form of a letter written by Purushan to his mother. On his way he finds a dead body, which he later identifies as that of Hari's.

Purushan decides to go Hari's house to inform his mother about her son's death. On his way he meets some of Hari's friends, and the character Hari in the film unfolds as the memories of these friends about him, mostly conflicting. They too join Purushan in his journey. As they reach Hari's house, the small group that started the journey develops into a crowd of young men. Finally they inform Hari's mother about her son's death.” __ (For the story _ Courtesy to and sourced from Cinema Of Malayalam)
