| An Innocent Man, released by Touchstone Pictures in 1989, features Tom Selleck in one of his truest standout roles. In it, Selleck plays Jimmie Rainwood, an airline mechanic and upstanding citizen in Southern California. One night, Parnell and Scaliese, two crooked cops, break into Rainwood's house, which they assume is an address where they will buy drugs. The house ends up being the wrong address, and when Jimmy walks out of the restroom with a hair dryer in hand, Parnell shoots him. In order to save themselves, they set Jimmie up and he gets sentenced to six years in prison. Rainwood is less than well versed to the horrors of prison life, something demonstrated well when he first gets there and sees the guy he was talking to on the bus up get shanked with a screwdriver and set on fire. Soon, a vicious black prisoner, Jingles (in a truly horrifying though clichéd performance by Bruce A. Young) and his gang take an interest in Jimmie, letting him know he is about to be their "kid." After getting savegely beaten by Jingles and his boys, Jimmie finally realises that all the rumblings about having to "take care of his problem" are his only recourse. A plexiglas shank is fashioned for him, and in a sickening, but gripping scene, Jimmie kills a defiant-to-the-end Jingles and ends up spending three months in a windowless subterranean cell. Upon his release back to general lockup, Rainwood is a minor hero. Upon getting paroled, Jimmie decides to get revenge on the scumbag cops who framed him. Though marked by some heavily late 80s cheesiness, An Innocent Man is a solid Selleck effort.
