This Marathi film Anahat (Eternity) directed by Amol palekar, delineates a woman asserting her right to sexual fulfillment. While Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre lends her glamour to the pivotal role, the 90-minute package also boasts of veteran artistes like Anant Nag and Deepti Naval.

Professionally media-hyped and strategically released in different parts of Maharashtra, Anahat was screened as the opening film of the Indian Panorama 2003 in the forthcoming international film festival.

Anahat, (the eighth feature film of the actor-turned-director), is the second offering in Palekar’s examination of gender-related issues, the first being the not-yet-screened-but-applauded Daayra.

Inspired by Surendra Verma’s Hindi play Surya ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak, Anahat revolves around two individuals — a king who is unable to provide an heir and a queen forced to choose a potent mate for one night. But while the queen is ordered to merely produce an inheritor through the prevalent custom of Niyoga, she ends up enjoying the sexual act. Her overt demand for a repeat act thickens the plot.

Palekar has handled the epic depiction very sensitively, thereby underlining the popular and unjust definitions of sexuality and potency.
