Awara Paagal Deewana (English: Wayward, Crazy and Insane) is a 2002 Bollywood action comedy directed by Vikram Bhatt. The film is a remake of the American film The Whole Nine Yards
. The film's music was written by Anu Malik, and the lyrics by Sameer.

Synopsis

The film centres on the legacy of a dead Indian underworld don (Om Puri), who dies of a heart attack at the beginning of the film. He leaves diamonds worth $10bn at the New York Bank, to be distributed equally between his son Vikrant, his daughter Preeti, and Preeti's husband Guru. To claim the diamonds, all three benefactors must be present at the bank, or, if dead, their death certificates must be presented. Shortly after the Don's death, Vikrant attempts to eliminate Guru by assassinating the Indian Home Minister in full view of television cameras while disguised as him. Guru flees to the US to escape prosecution.

The middle of the film is predominantly a comedy, broken up by the obligatory Bollywood song and dance routines; however, the beginning and end are characterised by several martial arts fights, including some use of wire-fu, and the film has an explosive climax typical of action films. As well as taking its plot from The Whole Nine Yards, the film lifts almost the entire lobby scene from The Matrix virtually bullet-for-bullet (minus Trinity's part).

Characters

Vikrant (Rahul Dev) is the don's treacherous son. In an early scene, he sells a high-tech pistol to a Chinese gang. When his bodyguards try to stop him, he disarms and kills them both.

Guru (Akshay Kumar) is the don's son-in-law; ironically, he is more loyal to his father-in-law than Vikrant and therefore more favoured. He recaptures the stolen pistol Vikrant sold to the Chinese, defeating four ninja in the process.

Preeti (Preeti Jhangiani) is the don's daughter and Guru's wife. She wants a divorce from Guru, on the grounds that she has seen little of him in the five months they were married, and the marriage was purely one of convenience. Guru refuses to give her a divorce, out of pride and the fact that doing so would annul his claim to his late father-in-law's diamonds.

Anmol (Aaftab Shivdasani) is a dentist living in America, who becomes unwillingly embroiled in the gangsters' dispute when Guru, having fled Vikrant's attempt to frame him, moves next door. He lives with his wife Mona (Amrita Arora), his father Manilal (Paresh Rawal) and his mother-in-law Paramjeet (Supriya Pilgaonkar). Both Anmol and Manilal are extremely hen-pecked, forced to hand over their income to their wives and do most domestic chores. Anmol mentions that his chief reason for staying married is to keep his Green Card. Anmol's assistant, Tina (Aarti Chhabria), has a fixation on criminal bosses and Guru in particular.

Yeda Anna (Sunil Shetty) (Hindi for 'Crazy Brother') and Chota Chatri (Hindi for 'Little Umbrella', referring to his trademark umbrella in which he keeps a concealed swordstick) are both assassins for the mob. Both have great difficulty speaking; Chatri has a stammer, while Yeda frequently forgets the names of things, to comic effect.

Soundtrack

Awards

Paresh Rawal won awards for "Best Performance in a Comic Role" from Filmfare, Screen Weekly and Zee Cine. Johnny Lever was also nominated for Screen Weekly's "Best Performance in a Comic Role" award for his part as Chhota Chhatri.
