Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Junior is a fictional character from the Harry Potter series of books. He is the son of Barty Crouch. He is portrayed in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by David Tennant.

Crouch (born circa 1963; suffered a Dementor's kiss in 1995) was a Death Eater who was captured with the group responsible for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom, parents of Neville Longbottom. His father, who headed the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the time, sentenced him to life imprisonment in Azkaban.

However, Crouch's father rescued him as a favour to his dying mother by switching their bodies. Crouch's mother later died and was buried under his name. His father kept him under control with the Imperius Curse and forced him to hide under an invisibility cloak at all times. Crouch was nursed back to health by Winky, the family's House-Elf. Bertha Jorkins discovered the truth, and years later it reached Lord Voldemort. He rescued Crouch and put his father under the Imperius Curse. Crouch then kidnapped Mad-Eye Moody and, with the help of the polyjuice potion, took over Moody's job of teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts. His father was later killed by Crouch himself.

The Triwizard Tournament was being held that year and Crouch had to make sure that Harry won. When Harry touched the Triwizard Cup it took him to a graveyard, via portkey, and his blood was planned to be used to bring Voldemort back to power. The plan succeeded, but Harry escaped.

Crouch planned to succeed where his master had failed, but failed to kill Harry. Under the influence of Veritaserum, a powerful truth potion, he recounted his plan and his intentions throughout the year. He was to be watched over so that he could give his testimony later, but instead, before he could come to trial, he had his soul sucked out by Dementor's Kiss. It is important to note that he is still technically alive, but one would hardly dare to identify what he has been reduced to as "alive." It is never revealed what happened to him after he had his soul sucked out, but it is assumed he either died or was sent back to Azkaban.

In the movie, Crouch is shown in the dream Harry has during his summer break, apparently having escaped from Azkaban on his own. This disagreement with the book is presumably intended to simplify the storyline.

The film version of Crouch Jr. is depicted with a habit of flicking his tongue like a snake. This habit is further played upon in a confrontation scene between Mad Eye Moody (Crouch in disguise) and Crouch Sr., in which the false Moody flicks his tongue and Crouch Sr. seems to recognize the trait.
