Movies - Battle Angel

Battle Angel is an upcoming live action film based on the popular manga Battle Angel Alita (known as Gunnm in Japan) by Yukito Kishiro. The film adaptation by director James Cameron has been confirmed by Kishiro. In December 2005, James Cameron announced that he is looking for a lead female role (ages 16-mid 20s) for Battle Angel. The movie was set to start production in February 2006 but has apparently been pushed back because of script problems and due to Cameron's desicion to film his Avatar film first. Described as "mega-budget", it will be the first live action film employing a fully computer generated humanoid lead character. Gally will be CG, but an actress will perform her movements and emotions through an improved version of Performance Capture, a motion capture technique pioneered by Robert Zemeckis in The Polar Express.

From: 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., TriStar Pictures and New Line Cinema

Battle Angel will also be the first major Hollywood production entirely shot in 3-D, using a new visual stereo system (called Fusion Camera system) pioneered by James Cameron himself in several underwater documentaries such as Ghosts of the Abyss
and Aliens of the Deep
. James Cameron stated that he plans to combine the first three books of the manga series for Battle Angel. If the film is a box office success, he will proceed to make two more sequels to complete the manga series.

Plot

The story is set in the 26th century, the story takes place 300 years after a societal collapse caused by a major war. In that society, it's a technological dark age following a pinnacle of achievement far beyond where we are right now. People are augmented a lot as workers, so being a cyborg is not unusual. Alita is a cyborg. She has an organic human brain. She has a completely artificial body and she's lost her memory. She is found in a wreckage and reconstituted by a lonely scientist.

Trivia

  • The film will be released on Dolby Digital 3-D projection, the first of its kind.
  • The film will have a $200,000,000 budget, and possibly exceeding it.
  • Many of the film's major characters, besides Alita, will also be CGI.
  • There will be "Motorball" in the film.

Production details

  • John Williams
will compose the music for this film.
  • Vince Pace will be the Director of photography.
  • James Cameron said in an interview in 2005 that the film will get a strict PG-13 rating.
  • The film will encompass the first three books of the series.
  • If Battle Angel Alita is successful at the box office, James Cameron plans to make it a trilogy, according to Aintitcool.com

Production history

  • December 7, 2005 James Cameron is preparing to start production. 20th Century Fox Studios has dispersed an ad to find a leading female role, presumably for Alita. The ad calls for female applicants aged from 16 to mid-20s who are athletic, agile and have an ear for languages and dialects. The submissions are said to be due on December 16, 2005. However, Aintitcool.com has reported a rumor from within the studio that the ad is actually intended for the mysterious James Cameron project, dubbed Project 880
. In March 2006, Cameron reported to Aintitcool.com that the mysterious Project 880 is Avatar, and he is unsure now whether he will even do that film first. This means that Battle Angel Alita may come out first after all.
