Movies - Beloved

Beloved, originally Toni Morrison's Pulitzer-Prize-winning 1987 novel, was released as a Hollywood film in 1998. It was produced by Oprah Winfrey
's Harpo Productions.

Cast and crew

Plot

The film's main themes are slavery, brief freedom, and their lasting psychological presence. Some years after the American Civil War, former slave Sethe lives with her grown daughter Denver outside Cincinnati. Sethe is stolid and hard working; Denver wants society. Paul D, a former slave who knew Sethe, happens on them and joins the farm and family, but not before the house rattles and pitches, as if spirits reject Paul D's coming. Next, inexplicably, a young woman about Denver's age arrives, behaving in childlike ways, speaking and walking awkwardly, calling herself "Beloved." Who she is, her effect on Sethe, and Paul D's responses propel Sethe into the past and Denver into a new maturity.

Trivia

Thandie Newton
's first name is actually Thandiwe, which means, interestingly enough, "beloved".

Box Office failure

The film did not do well in theaters, except in university towns. Some naysayers expected this, opining that the book is too difficult to transform into a film. This film is often seen as the only failure of billionaire Oprah Winfrey
. Ms. Winfrey stated that she would never act in another film after this movie bombed.
