| Biollante (ビオランテ - Biorante) is a daikaiju that appeared in the 1989 film Godzilla vs Biollante. A genetic hybrid of human, rose and Godzilla created by the Japanese scientist Dr. Shiragami, she is one of realatively few human-originated—and even fewer female—creatures in daikaiju eiga. Biollante began as the human girl Erika (played by actress Yasuko Sawaguchi), daughter of Dr. Shiragami, a genetic engineer. Shiragami and his daughter work in a laboratory located in and funded by the Republic of Saradia; after a bomb kills Erika, Shiragami believes her spirit to have remained in the roses she had kept. When these roses are damaged years later, and having acquired cells of Godzilla from the Japanese government in exhange for his expertise, Shiragami splices cells from the roses with those of Godzilla. This results in the super-plant Biollante, which escapes from his lab into the nearby Lake Ashino. Biollante grows into a giant roselike flower in the lake, a docile form that nonetheless features teeth in its bud and vines and emits eerie calls. Godzilla shortly appears and ignites Biollante with his atomic ray; she dissipates into a swarm of cells that ascend into the atmosphere. She later reassembles into a more menacing form displaying both crocodilian features (e.g. a large head, fangs) and plantlike components (e.g. vines, leaves, and flowers). Godzilla's DNA becomes more evident as she becomes yet another scourge of humanity, destroying everything in her path. She again fights Godzilla, using an acidic stream of radioactive sap among other offenses, and dissipates again after the battle. (This tendency to dis- and reassemble at a cellular level suggests immortality.) The final form of Biollante was animated via suitmation by Masashi Takegumi, who used a pole to operate the creature's maw, and via wireworks, which controlled her several tentacles. Both designs may have been partially inspired by the "Audrey II" of Little Shop of Horrors (1986).
