Bleach bypass is an optical effect used in such films as Se7en
, Kansas City and The Crow and most notably Three Kings. The procedure of bleach bypass entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the image along with the color dyes. The result is a black and white image over a color image. The images usually would have reduced saturation, an increased contrast, and an overall pastel look.

While originally a laboratory technique, it can now be achieved digitally through computer generated imagery and filters.

Batman Begins
reportedly used this technique for some scenes.

Stephen Spielberg used this process for his latest film Munich to create the 70s look.

This process was, however, first used in Kon Ichikawa's film, 'Her Brother'(1960). MIYAZAWA Kazuo as Daiei Motion Picture Company's cameraman invented Bleach bypass for Ichikawa's film.
