Plot summary

The Rancho Carne High School cheerleading squad "The Toros" are aiming for their sixth consecutive national championship title. Big Red, their team captain, is graduating and Torrance Shipman is elected to take her place. Torrance soon discovers that Big Red stole the team's award winning routines from the East Compton Clovers, a team without the financial backing to travel to the championships.

The Toros struggle to come up with an original routine; meanwhile the Clovers, led by Isis, make an appeal to a popular television talk show and manage to raise the cash to enter the tournament. New girl Missy Pantone is picked for the Toros squad to replace one of the girls injured in practice. She and Torrance soon become close friends, as do Torrance and Missy's brother Cliff, when he becomes her romantic interest.
