Movies - Bunty Aur Babli

Bunty Aur Babli is a 2005 Indian Hindi film directed by Shaad Ali starring Amitabh Bachchan
, Abhishek Bachchan
and Rani Mukerji
. It was the first film to have both father Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan act together.

Synopsis

It is about a small town boy and a small town girl who want to make it big in the world. They resort to conning people to gain money and to live a luxurious life. It was one of 2005's biggest grossers.

The plot

Rakesh (Abhishek Bachchan
) lives in a small laid-back town, aptly called Fursatganj in Uttar Pradesh in northern India. He wants to become big and famous unlike his father who is a honest, down-to-earth ticket collector in the Indian Railways. He is always dreaming up business schemes and hopes to join the ranks of the biggest industrialists of India: the Birlas, Tatas and Ambanis. There are two kinds of people in the world he says, those who wait for things to happen (water in the tap) and those who make things happen (make a tap so they don't have to wait) - and he is one of the latter. His parents (veterans Raj Babbar and Rameshwari) feel he is building castles in the air and want him to get a steady job. He argues with his parents and leaves home for Lucknow to sell his investment scheme at a chit fund company.

Vimmi (Rani Mukerji
) lives in another small laid-back town called Pankinagar. She too dreams big and beyond the confines of her small town. She wants to become a supermodel and beauty queen and her parents (veterans Kiran Juneja and Puneet Issar) want her to marry a local boy who has a job as a Head Clerk and was good in studies. Vimmi loathes the idea of giving up her dreams to get married and protests but her otherwise loving father puts his foot down. She decides to run away to Lucknow to enter the Miss India contest.

In Lucknow Rakesh's scheme is rejected by the agent and Vimmi is denied entry to a pageant because entries have closed. They meet each other at railway station and go to Kanpur together. There Rakesh realizes to his horror that the agent who rejected his scheme had suggested the same scheme to the company in his own name and received Rs. 10,000 in reward!

Rakesh and Vimmi try to con the man who stole Rakesh's idea with success. They decide to go to Mumbai, where Rakesh and Vimmi both have more opportunities to fulfill their dreams. In order to gather money to survive in Mumbai, they become Bunty and Babli, con artists. Their notorious activities are spread far and wide by newspapers and people are in awe of their abilities. Upon reaching Mumbai, Rakesh realises he had rather be infamous doing what he does well (conning people), than work hard like his role model industrialists. He decides to become Bunty forever. Vimmi reminds him that he could not have pulled off all this without her and that Bunty will not be able to live without Babli. They decide to hitch up and live as Bunty and Babli. They even get married by taking rounds around the sacred fire (Saptapadi) by themselves and make vows to live forever as Bunty and Babli...except when...Babli has something on her mind which she says they will worry about later.

They go on a conning spree selling the Taj Mahal to the seventh richest man in the world whose fiancee insists she will get married only in the monument with Babli pretending to be the Chief Minister (a spoof on UP's CM Mayawati) in the Chief Minister's office!

By now Police Commissioner Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan
) is hot on their chase. He is amazed at how popular they are in the media and how they have become role models for some young people. Meanwhile Bunty and Babli are now expecting a baby while they land another caper. However, this time a lot of things come together at once and Dashrath Singh is closing in on them while Babli delivers a baby. Babli realises that they have had a narrow escape with the law and it is time to call quits or they will lose their baby. Bunty does not feel the same way but she tell him he has to choose between the family or the old lifestyle. He relents and they are just about to do their first lawful thing in a long time - buy tickets to go back home - when Dasrath Singh apprehends them. However, after a heart wrenching speech, Dashrath Singh lets them go. In the end Rakesh and Vimmi become secret agents.
