Burn! (also titled Queimada) is a 1969 film starring Marlon Brando and directed by Gillo PontecorvoPlotA British agent, William Walker, is sent to the island of Queimada (an imaginary Portuguese colony in the Caribbean) in order to organize an uprising of black slaves to overthrow the Portuguese regime. The reason is that Queimada is an important sugar cane producer and therefore Great Britain wants to get the economic control on the island. The idea of Great Britain is to replace the Portuguese administration by a formally souvereign state controlled by white latifundists loyal to Great Britain. In order to realize this project William Walker convinces the black slaves to fight for their liberation from slavery and for freedom. The leader of the rebellion becomes Jose` Dolores. After the overthrow of the Portuguese regime the slaves are formally "free" but must de facto continue to work in the sugar cane plantations without any right in even worse conditions than before. William Walker leaves the island after the regime change. He comes back to Queimada many years later this time in order to destroy the black slave emancipation movement he had created. In fact Jose` Dolores took seriously the ideals of freedom Walker taught him and now he is leading a rebels army against the British puppet regime in Queimada being the former slaves only nominally "free" and without any right. It is remarkable that Walker does now not work for the British government but for the "Royal Sugar Company" which has become so powerful that it can organize its own army and decides directly the politics in Queimada ordering even the execution of one of its puppet presidents. Eventually, the rebels army is defeated and Jose` Dolores is executed. However, the rebellion is not over. The movie ends when Walker is killed by a rebel, and, as a result, Dolores' death is avenged.[ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Burn! ] Some related entries: Casper the Friendly Ghost | Master | Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport | Onegin | Hellraiser | Les Boys | Babes in Toyland | A Matter of Life and Death | Arthur Cohn | Operation Good Guys | Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article Burn!; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License.
