Movies - Candy Store Owner

The Candy Store Owner is a fictional character from the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and both film adaptations. He sells Charlie Bucket
the winning Wonka Bar with the last Golden Ticket inside.

Owner in book

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie finds money in the street and buys a Wonka Bar. With the extra money, he buys another bar, and opens it and finds the last Golden Ticket. The Candy Store Owner helps him get away from the crowd, a man asks to buy it for £50 and a bike, a woman asks to buy it for £500. He is also extremly excited that it was found "right here in my little shop!" This version of him is an overweight guy that looks like Elvis.

Owner in 1971 film

In Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
, the role of the candy shop owner was expanded slightly and is named Bill. He sings The Candy Man at the beginning of the film. Bill later sells a Wonka Scrumdiddlyumptious to Charlie and then a regular Wonka Bar, which contains the last Golden Ticket.

In the 1971 version, the Golden Ticket isn't recovered until Charlie opens it in the street. The news stand owner apparently helps Charlie get away from the crowd of people trying to buy the Golden Ticket.

Bill was played by Aubrey Woods.

Owner in 2005 film

In the second film adaptation of the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
, the role is diminished, and Bill is recasted as an un-named British man of African descent. Charlie finds a $10 note partially hidden in the gutter and goes to the candy store, still unaware that the last Golden Ticket that was found was a fake. After purchasing a Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight Wonka Bar at the counter, Charlie opens it and finds the ticket. This leads the store owner to exclaim "You found Wonka's last Golden Ticket. In my shop too!".

After other customers offer Charlie money and gifts in exchange for the ticket, the store owner tells them to leave him alone. He then tells Charlie to take the ticket home straight away.

The store owner from the 2005 film version is played by Oscar James.
