Movies - Children of Heaven

Children of Heaven is an 1997 Iranian film. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998.

Director Majid Majidi
was able to get very convincing and heartwarming performances from amateur child actors. His films often highlight moments in lives of ordinary Iranians that in retrospect start to seem remarkable and touching, like a documentary of little lives. This particular film, for example, is a story of a brother and sister and their adventures over a pair of shoes. In the process, the film also touches upon the more serious subject of the political situation in Iran as well as class differences between the rich and the poor and daily urban life. The movie points out, that even small joys and sorrows can mean all the world to a child.

Interesting Fact

As of 2004, Majidi was the only Iranian director who has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with the film Children of Heaven in 1998. He lost the award to the Italian film Life Is Beautiful

Synopsis

Ali takes his little sister Zara's shoes to the shoemaker to be repaired, but on the way home, he loses them. The siblings decide to keep the predicament a secret from their parents, knowing that there is no money to buy a replacement pair, and fearing that they will be punished. They devise a scheme to share Ali's sneakers: Zara will wear them to school in the morning and hand them off to Ali at midday so he can attend afternoon classes. This uncomfortable arrangement leads to one adventure after another as they attempt to hide the plan from their parents and teachers, attend to their schoolwork and errands, and acquire a new pair of shoes for Zara.
