City of the Living Dead is an Italian zombie film from director Lucio Fulci. It has numerous alternate titles, such as Gates of Hell and Paura nella città dei morti viventi.

Plot

After Father William Thomas (Fabrizio Jovine) hangs himself in a cemetery, the gates of hell are opened. Zombies with abilities of super strength, teleportation and levitation appear and start killing off people in town. Investigating reporter Peter Bell (Christopher George) along with psychic Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl) travel to Dunwich New England, and from the book of Enoch learn that they must close the portal to hell before All Saints Day, or the dead will over take the earth.

German Release Status

To date all German versions of the film have been banned since its initial release over twenty years ago.

First release - Ein Zombie hing am Glockenseil in 1982, banned in 1986.
Second release - Ein Toter hing am Glockenseil with cuts, banned in 1988
Third release - Ein Leiche hing am Glockenseil with numerous cuts, removing nearly all gore scenes. Banned in 2001

There was thought to be a fourth version titled Ein Kadaver hing am Glockenseil with further cuts in the event Leiche was banned, but nothing has appeared to support this.
