Cormac McLaggen is a fictional character in the Harry Potter series. He made his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Cormac McLaggen, a Gryffindor student one year above Harry Potter, is introduced for the first time during the train journey to Hogwarts. An aggressive and arrogant character from the outset, he plays roles both in the fortunes of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and in the love life of Hermione Granger.

When Harry Potter held his first tryouts as Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, McLaggen tried out for the position of Keeper. Harry disliked McLaggen's bossy and abrasive personality. However, McLaggen was performing well in the trial until jinxed by Hermione Granger who surreptitiously used the Confundus Charm, causing him to miss his last save. Ron Weasley made all of his saves and was chosen instead. McLaggen did not give in graciously, but accused Ginny Weasley of favouring Ron by giving him shots that were easy to block. Harry rejected this accusation and pointed out that Ginny's goal attempt was in fact the one that gave Ron the most trouble.

The wisdom of Harry's choice was proven during one game when Ron was unable to play and McLaggen was substituted as Keeper. This led to a complete disaster when McLaggen ordered the team about instead of focusing on his own position. Leaving his post to "demonstrate" the correct use of the Beater's bat, he managed to knock Harry unconscious with the Bludger. Gryffindor was defeated by a devastating 320 points to 60, making McLaggen highly unpopular.Once he woke up Harry claimed to want to murder Mclaggen but this was probably just rage talking. It's indicated the rest of the team had already caught up with him though what they did is not revealed at any time.

McLaggen was a member of Horace Slughorn's Slug Club because of his Uncle Tiberius (one of the elders who resigned from the Wizengamot in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). As part of Hermione's campaign to annoy Ron for dating Lavender Brown, she allowed McLaggen to escort her to Slughorn's Christmas party. She was quickly disgusted by his aggressive behaviour under the mistletoe and ended up spending the night hiding from him.

Before the book's release, J.K. Rowling had revealed that she would be including a character called McLaggen because she liked the name.
