| Coup de Torchon is a 1981 French film based on Jim Thompson's 1964 novel Pop. 1280, directed by Bertrand Tavernier. While the setting shifts from the West Texas boom town of Thompson's novel to French colonized West Africa, it maintains nearly the entire plot of the original novel. PlotLucien Cordier (played by Philippe Noiret) is the ineffectual local constable, with a cheating wife and laughable job. He accepts condesension from his superiors and his wife with good humor, as his anti-social personality allows him to tolerate such abuse in light of his own miscreancy. After numerous trystes and murders, his pathology catches up with him in the film's climax. The film is considered one of the most faithful adaptations of Thompson's work.Cast
