Movies - Crash

*The LAPD logs almost 1 million encounters with the public every year, from 9-1-1 responses to warnings for traffic stops. If casual interactions are included – when the cop on the beat just stops to chat with a civilian, for instance – LAPD estimates the number of "encounters" would double or triple. In 2004, 4,907 public complaints were filed, of which – to date – 4,760 have been closed. Only 164 of the closed complaints were sustained. Even if the 138 complaints with a determination still pending are included with the 164 sustained complaints, that's a small fraction of a percent of all the interactions police have with the public.
  • Only 42 percent of LAPD's sworn employees are white. Urban blacks know they are twice as likely to be victims of violence as whites. As a result, most blacks support their local police. Indeed, many urge them to become more "proactive."
The film has likewise been criticized by black liberal commentators who feel white supremacy and white racism are far more destructive than any other type of prejudice, and feel that the movie is "self-indulgent" for white Americans who "want to feel victimized too".

Awards

Crash was nominated for six awards in the 78th Academy Awards (2006). Although it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004, it did not qualify for the 77th Academy Awards, as it was not released theatrically until 2005.

Crash beat out frontrunner Brokeback Mountain
, as well as Munich
, Capote
, and Good Night, And Good Luck.

Trivia

  • Crash contains more profanity than any other film nominated for the best picture Oscar over the prior five years with 182 expletives, 99 of which
are "fuck," according to a report by Family Media Guide.
  • Before Ryan Phillippe
    signed on, Heath Ledger
was in talks for the role of Hanson. Ledger's film Brokeback Mountain
would go on to compete as the favorite for the title of Best Picture against Crash, although the latter was the surprise winner at the 78th Academy Awards. Other first choices include John Cusack
as Rick Cabot and Forest Whitaker
    as Cameron.
  • Crash, a self-described passion piece for director Paul Haggis, was partially inspired by a real life incident where he was carjacked (mentioned on the DVD commentary track).
  • A BusinessWeek article on product placement noted that the Lincoln Navigator SUV is featured prominently in the film.
  • The California Vehicle Code requires Authorized Emergency Vehicles to have a steady-burning red lamp visible for 1,000 feet to the front of the vehicle. In scene 4, Matt Dillon's character does a car stop on Terence's character. The patrol car has the right kind of California light bar but the light bar is mounted backward with the steady-burning red to the rear. The patrol car in this scene appears in several others with the backward light bar.
  • Ludacris' character, Anthony, hates rap music. The irony is in the fact that Ludacris is an award-winning rapper.
  • In the movie, Farhad can't read English (according to his daughter, when checked on by insurance person) and yet he fishes out Danial from store reciept and yellow pages
