Movies - Cube Zero

Cube Zero is a 2004 Canadian sci-fi movie directed by Ernie Barbarash. It is the third movie in the Cube series
and the plot is primarily about people trapped in a maze of cube-shaped rooms with some rooms containing deadly traps and some without. The first two movies take place entirely within the maze while Cube Zero takes place both within the maze and outside the maze.

Plot summary

Cube Zero is a prequel to the original science fiction film Cube. Unlike the other movies in the trilogy, Cube
and Hypercube
, the story is set from the perspectives of both those trapped in the Cube and of the people monitoring them.

The Cube itself is a maze consisting of six-sided rooms. Some of the rooms have various traps, including sharp wires, flames, blades, and chemicals. Each room must be tested for traps by a method known as "booting," which involves throwing a boot into a trapped room in an attempt to activate any traps.

The film focuses on the child prodigy and Cube technician Eric Wynn, and Cassandra Rains, a woman placed in the Cube whom he finds himself interested in. Wynn argues with his co-worker, Dodd, over the fate of Owen, a co-worker who finds the Cube's exit and meets the final challenge. After realising that working in the Cube is inhumane, he decides to save Rains, and helps her to the exit.

Wynn and Kazan

There is further controversy surrounding the final scenes of the film where Wynn shares similar dialogue to the autistic savant Kazan from the original Cube, which led some people to believe Wynn is actually Kazan.

A statement has been made by the director that indicates this theory does not reflect his vision.

The lobotomy that made Wynn autistic is assumed to have also happened to Kazan. This gives Kazan some much-needed backstory. That is that Kazan once escaped the cube and was trapped and put again in the cube with a lobotomy.
