Movies - Cyborg

Cyborg was a 1989
science fiction film based in a post-apocalyptic future. It was originally intended as a sequel in the He-Man universe portrayed in the 1987
film Masters of the Universe, with the working title of Masters of the Universe 2: Cyborg. However the francise was losing interest, so Cyborg was released as a stand-alone film.

This was a low-budget film that was primarily intended as an action film vehicle for the martial arts specialist Jean-Claude Van Damme as the silent, brooding hero. It includes typical post-apocalypse garb and settings, and the plot does not bear close examination well. The acting was considered subpar by film critics, and it was generally panned as being unintelligent with mediocre acting. Some viewers enjoyed the film, however, for its action content.

Cyborg was written by Kitty Chalmers, directed by Albert Pyun, and released by MGM/UA Studios, it was the last film by the now defunct Cannon Films that produced the He-Man movie. The cast included Jean-Claude Van Damme, Deborah Richter, and Vincent Klyn. The MPAA rating for the film was R due to violent content. It ran for 86 minutes in color with stereo sound. Two sequels were created Cyborg 2 and Cyborg 3: The Collector both of which were also low-budget and of which the latter was straight-to-video release.

As a plague sweeps through the ruined country, a surviving group of scientists in Atlanta seeks a cure. The information needed to produce this cure is located in New York city, so the scientists produce a female cyborg named Pearl Prophet (Haddon) to return the data. Once at New York, she runs into a gang of anarchist baddies led by Fender (Klyn). Escaping, she finds the warrior Gibson Rickenbacker (Van Damme) who is a human smuggler that works to lead people out of the city to safety.

Rickenbacker is knocked unconscious and Prophet is taken captive by Fender, who decides to take her to Atlanta and hold her for ransom. For Rickenbacker this has now become a personal vendetta, and he follows Fender to Atlanta.

The characters "Gibson Rickenbacker" and "Fender" are named after the "Big 3" USA based Guitar building companies.

A sequel, starring Angelina Jolie
, was made in 1993.
