Dang Bireley's and the Young Gangsters (Thai title 2499 Antapan Krong Muang) is a 1997 film about young Thai gangsters in 1950s Thailand. It was the debut film from director Nonzee Nimibutr and was the first screenplay by director and screenwriter Wisit Sasanatieng.

Plot

The main character, portrayed by Jessadaporn Pholdee, is the son of a prostitute. The leading tough guy in his school, he models himself after Elvis Presley and James Dean. At the age of 13, he kills a man. He and his friends are kicked out of school. He becames famous as a protection racketeer from the age of 18. Eventually, he must face his schoolyard enemy, Pu ("Bottle-Bomb"), leading up to a John Woo-style shootout during a Buddhist ordination ceremony.

Trivia

The main character takes his name from a soft drink factory next door to his home that produces Dang Bireley's soda, an actual soft-drink brand in Thailand. His friends gave him that name, as in "Hey, Dang Bireley's ..." This leads to confusion about the title, which is variously referred to as Dang Bireley and the Young Gangsters, Dang Bireley's Young Gangsters and even Dang Bailey and the Young Gangsters. The 2499 in the Thai title refers to the year in the Buddhist calendar when the story takes place, making the film set in 1956.
