Plot

"Dark Water" tells the story of Dahlia Williams, a mother who has just divorced from her husband. Without enough money to rent a good apartment she goes with her daughter, Ceci to an island near Manhattan and a real state agent tries to rent her a small apartment in a scary rotten building. Her daughter Ceci hides in the roof after looking at the apartment and finds a Hello Kitty backpack. The backpack is left with the keeper, who promises to give it back to the Ceci if no one claims it in a week. Ceci, who did not want to live in the building at all, then suddenly starts to ask her mother to rent the apartment, which they eventually do.

During the first night, Dahlia sees that water is coming through the ceiling from the apartment above them. After talking to the building manager and the keeper, she finds out that no one has lived in that apartment (number 10F) for about a month. Ceci then gets an imaginary friend named Natasha and starts acting strangely in school. The divorce gets complicated and the father sues Dahlia.

After the keeper tells Ceci that someone had claimed the backpack, Dahlia finds it in the basement and sees that it belongs to a girl named Natasha. She discover that Natasha's parents have gone and apparently her mother took her.

Ceci passed out in school after having an argument with her imaginary friend and her father takes her home. Without news on her daughter, Dahlia goes to the roof and finds Natasha's body in the water supply. Natasha was left home alone by her father, and got to the roof and fell into the water supply. Her mother thought she was with her father, while her father thought she was with her mother.

After this the girl gets locked in the bathtub by Natasha's spirit that wants Dahlia as her mother. Dahlia agrees to be Natasha's mother if she doesn't kill Ceci. Eventually the police rescue Ceci, who is in shock and also discover Dahlia dead.

While getting her things to leave the apartment with her father, Ceci is stuck in the elevator while her mother's spirit talks to her. Ceci goes to live with her father.
