| David Seltzer is an American screenwriter who is perhaps best known for having an uncredited role in writing the screenplay of the 1971 musical film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The film credits the original book's author, Roald Dahl as the sole screenplay adaptor, however it has been revealed that Seltzer rewrote 30% of Dahl's script, adding such elements as the "Slugworth subplot", and music other than the original Oompa Loompa compositions (including "Pure Imagination", and "The Candy Man Can"). Many fans of the original book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as well as the creators of the 2005 adaptation of the book, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, disagree with these alterations. Roald Dahl himself disliked the 1971 film version. There are, however, some that maintain that the edits to the 1971 film were positive, and that the 2005 adaptation veers farther from the source material than the original adaptation.
