Destroy All Monsters (怪獣総進撃 Kaijū Sōshingeki, "All Monsters Charge") is a 1968 daikaiju eiga. The ninth in Toho Studios' Godzilla series, it was directed by Ishiro Honda with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya and Sadamasa Arikawa. While the plot resembles that of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1965), this entry is significant in that it showcases 11 daikaiju, a record for the Godzilla series until Godzilla: Final Wars
(2004). Several of these (Gorosaurus, Baragon, Manda, Varan) had only appeared in their debut films at this point; others (Anguirus, Rodan, Mothra, Minya, Kumonga) returned from previous Godzilla films.

The film begins in the year 1999 when Monster Island is taken over by an unknown force. Suddenly the monsters held in Monster Island appeared around the world, attacking the major cities. Rodan attacked Moscow, Mothra attacked Bejing, and Godzilla attacked New York. In response the spaceship SY-3 was sent to monster island, where they encountered a race of alien beings known as the Kilakks, who said that they were in control of the monsters. The crew of the SY-3 managed to escape from Monster Island and warned the military, who began looking for the Kilakks Earth base. Suddenly Godzilla, Rodan, Manda, and Mothra all attacked Tokyo at the same time. The humans were about to give in when they found the Kilakks Moon Base, which was controlling the monsters. The SY-3 traveled to the moon and destroyed the machine, freeing the monsters. All of the monsters met at Mt. Fuji to fight the aliens, who in response sent out King Ghidorah. After battling against Godzilla, Anguirus, Gorosaurus, and Minya the space monster fell and was trapped in webbing by Mothra and Kumonga. Godzilla then destroyed the alien base, ending the Kilakks threat, and then Godzilla and the other monsters returned to Monster Island.

Trivia

This was the last Godzilla film in which Tsuburaya had any direct involvement, and was originally intended to be the final Godzilla film, the closing scene a tribute both to the special effects director and to the daikaiju. Toho changed their minds following the success of this film at the Japanese box office.
The band Destroy All Monsters took their name from the title of this film.
