Cast

Story

The story starts in the streets of Mumbai, where a gang of high-speed motorcyclists are robbing banks and money-vans and disappearing into thin air - or rather into pizza delivery boys - before anyone can say thief. ACP Jai Dixit, a no-nonsense cop is called on the case. He seeks the help of a scatterbrained, clownish downtown racer named Ali and devises a trap to catch the thieves, but fails. Kabir, the leader of the gang, eventually taunts Dixit that he can't catch Kabir even if he were right in front of him. He is proved correct and the failure of Dixit leads to the breakup of his partnership with Ali. Kabir then lures Ali into his gang to replace another gang member who was killed, and sets his sight on the biggest casino in Goa.

Soundtrack

The title track, "Dhoom Machale", was released in a remixed version sung by the Thai-American singer Tata Young; it proved a big hit. The original was sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. Other tracks on the soundtrack included Dilbara, Shikdum, and Salaame; the music director was Pritam. The music swept most Indian film and popular music awards for the year 2004.

Trivia

  • The word "shikdum" is Turkish. It means "dirty dancing."
  • This is the first action film made by Yash Raj Films in 16 years, since Vijay (1988).
The movie was blamed for an increase in crime, juveniles who dressed their hair like John Abraham and stole things like cell phones for girlfriends. Yashraj films says movies can't be held responsible.

Dhoom is also the movie that is credited with sparking the trend among India's youth into "modifying" their bikes & encouraging street racing. For this, it has received a cult status among it's fans.

Some people looking for a scapegoat also blame the film for the increase in illegal street racing even though the film does show the dangers and glorification of illegal street racing.

Most of India's metros today have a vibrant street racing scene with bets being placed & drags taking place regularly past midnight on weekends. Even though this is illegal & discouraged by the Police, it still attracts considerable crowds especially in places like Bangalore, Delhi & Mumbai. Bangalore incidentally is termed the "Mecca of Indian street racing" because of the presence of large numbers of "souped up" cars & bikes such as the Toyota Supra & Suzuki Hayabusa.
