Diary of a Country Priest (original French title: Journal d'un curé de campagne) is a 1951 French film directed by Robert Bresson, and starring Claude Laydu. It tells the story of a young, sickly priest, who has just arrived in his first parish, a village in northern France.

Bresson began his trademark technique of using only nonprofessionals as actors in this, his third feature film.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Georges Bernanos. Published in 1937, the novel received the Grand prix du roman de l'Academie francaise. This beautiful story, narrated in the voice of the idealistic priest, explores his courageous and faithful struggle to overcome the lethargy of the people in his parish. As the priest, whose name is never spoken, humbly tells the story of his daily work, his parish becomes a microcosm for the universal struggles, griefs and triumphs of humankind.

Awards

This film has won eight international awards, including the Grand Prize at the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals, and the Prix Louis Delluc.

The novel received the Grand prix du roman de l'Academie francaise.
