Die Hard 4.0 is the title of a fourth installment in the popular Die Hard
series. This film will again star veteran actor Bruce Willis as John McClane, the protagonist of the first three films.

Originally it was intended to adapt the script Tears of the Sun
into a jungled-based Die Hard, but Bruce Willis instead starred in a faithful adaptation of the story, released in 2003.

Another idea was to adapt a spec script called Die Hard 4:Die Hardest by British screenwriter Ben Trebilcook , author of Daisy Scarlett: Semper Ocultus and an unproduced spec script for Aliens vs. Predator. Trebilcook's story revolved around wreck diving in Trinidad.

The new story is based on a pitch by Doug Richardson, screenwriter on Die Hard 2: Die Harder
, who told Willis his idea while working with the actor on Hostage
. According to a 2005 interview with Willis in Empire magazine, the film will be called Die Hard 4.0 as it revolves around computers.

McClane's daughter will have a prominent role (an idea previously considered for Die Hard 3). It was speculated that Bruce Willis' real life daughter Rumer, who was born the same year that the original Die Hard was released, is a prime candidate for the part of Lucy McClane. (Jessica Simpson had previously auditioned for the role; Britney Spears, Mandy Moore and Lindsay Lohan were also rumored to be cast.) Taylor Fry played Lucy in the original Die Hard movie from 1988.

In early November of 2005, Bruce Willis appeared on the television show The View and said that the movie will take place 18 years after the first movie and his character is now retired.

There is no word as to whether or not John McTiernan will return as director on this film; he directed two of the other three Die Hard trilogy movies. It does not look as if Joel Silver will be involved either; he produced the first two films before Andy Vanja took over with his company Cinergi.
