Movies - Differences between book and film versions of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

There are differences between the book and film
versions of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
by J. K. Rowling.

Character alterations and omissions

  • The Dursleys, Mrs. Weasley, Bill Weasley
    , Charlie Weasley
    , Percy Weasley
    , Ludo Bagman
    , Narcissa Malfoy
, Bertha Jorkins, and Winky and Dobby
the House-elves are not in the film. Required alterations have such been made to the plot.
  • The only scene featuring Sirius Black
is when his head appears in the fire in the Gryffindor Common Room. Thus, Harry does not have this full year of writing to and from a hiding Sirus, and doesn't obviously start to come to regard him as a mixture of father and brother.
  • In the books, Harry and Ron's Yule Ball dates are identical twin sisters Parvati and Padma Patil, who are in, respectively, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw houses. In the movie they are fraternal twins and in Gryffindor house together.
  • Due to the omission of the Dursleys, the Weasleys do not meet them, Aurthur is not shocked that the Dursley's don't wish to say goodbye to Harry, and Harry wakes up from his first dream at the Weasleys' house.
  • Due to the omission of the House-Elves, Harry is helped by Neville for the Second Task (this idea actually does come from the book as it was mentioned that using Neville to help Harry learn about the Gillyweed was an original plan of Barty Crouch Jr.
    's).
  • The fact that Rita Skeeter is a beetle Animagus was not mentioned in the film. (However, it seems that in an original version of the script this storyline was included; when Madame Maxime and Hagrid dance and dicuss the giant heritage, Maxime pulls a bug from Hagrid's hair and eats it.) A possible reason it was cut is that this somewhat humorous subplot may have clashed with the more emotional ending.
  • The actual identification of Madame Maxime as a half-giantess is not in the film, but she is abnormally tall, and the conversation between her and Hagrid about it is partially shown.
  • In the movie, Cedric reappears and tells Harry to take his body back to his father. In the book, Cedric tells Harry to take his body back to his parents. Cedric's mother does not appear in the movie. Additionally, Amos Diggory was considerably kinder towards Harry in the film, as opposed to being rather rude to him as he was in the book; perhaps so that the audience would be a touch more sympathetic to the character after the loss of his son at the end.
  • There is no mention of Fleur being part-Veela, however her heritage was explicitly decribed in the promotional material. Veelas are never mentioned in the film, and Fleur doesn't appear to be exceptionally more beautiful than all of the other Beuxbaton girls.
  • Although she appears in the film, Moaning Myrtle
does not help Harry underwater during the second task. She doesn't tell where the merpeople live, instead Harry follows a merperson. She also does not talk about being flushed into the lake.
  • There is no appearance of the Leprechauns in the movie, while in the book they are the Irish mascots, though the Irish team makes a starry mirage Leprechaun in the sky at one point.
  • In the movie, Dumbledore grabs Harry violently, shakes him, and asks if he entered himself in the tournament. In the book, Dumbledore asks him quite calmly.

Regarding the Crouch family

  • There is no mention of Barty Crouch Sr. being under the Imperius Curse.
  • Barty Crouch Jr.
now appears in the first scene of the film, at the Riddle House as one of Lord Voldemort's servants.
  • Harry sees Barty Crouch Jr. casting the Dark Mark (although doesn't recognize him). In the book, he simply hears Barty's voice.
  • In the book, Harry and Krum find a mad Barty Crouch Sr. at the edge of the forest (still alive). His son murders him after Harry goes to get Dumbledore
. In the film, Harry finds him dead in the forest. In the book, Crouch Jr. later confesses killing his father, in the film he does not.
  • The three trial scenes in the book have been joined into one. Ludo Bagman's trial is cut, and Igor Karkaroff
reveals Barty Crouch, Jr. as a Death Eater. The Lestranges don't appear.
  • Both Snape and Moaning Myrtle mention Polyjuice Potion in the movie. In the book, it is not mentioned until Barty Crouch Jr. is exposed. However, Snape accuses Harry of stealing supplies from his private stores and Harry remembers that Hermione stole these supplies in their second year to concoct Polyjuce Potion.
  • In the book Barty Jr. is seen to be terrified during his trial and keeps saying he's innocent whereas in the film it's made obvious that he's guilty.
  • In the trial scene, Barty Crouch Jr. is seen frantically licking his lips. As foreshadowing, he also exhibits this behaviour when he is disguised as Mad-Eye Moody. (It is also implied that Barty Crouch Sr. actually recognised him, which led to his murder by his son). This clue does not appear in the book. However, Barty Crouch Sr. does say "You are no son of mine" when Barty Crouch Jr. comes up to him.
  • The specifics of Barty Crouch Jr.'s escape from Azkaban and the implications of his father and mother as his accomplices are not mentioned in the film. Crouch's mother is also not mentioned.
  • The film omits Cornelius Fudge
's summoning of the Dementors for them to perform their Kiss on Barty Crouch, Jr.. The only mention of the Kiss in the entire film series is when Sirius almost suffered that fate in the previous film. Barty Crouch, Jr. is instead last seen guarded by Snape
    , a suspicious watchman.
