| Disco Pigs was a play written by Enda Walsh. It was adapted into a film in 2001. The film was directed by Kirsten Sheridan; the daughter of filmmaker Jim Sheridan. The film adaptation starred Cillian Murphy, who had also played the role of Pig on the stage, and Elaine Cassidy. The film/ play revolves around the intense relationship of the two teenage protagonists, Darren and Sinead; nicknamed "Pig" and "Runt". Pig and Runt were born at the same hospital at nearly the same time and grow up right next door to each other. This brings about a very close relationship between the two that borders on telepathic. The two talk in their own caveman-like "language." Eventually, Runt begins to notice young men just as Pig begins to notice Runt. The nearing of their seventeenth birthdays brings about Pig's violent nature. Pig is very protective of Runt and assaults anyone at the local discothèque who flirts with her. As Pig and Runt become closer, Runt's parents decide it would be better if she stopped seeing Pig. They send her off to boarding school. Pig is crushed by this and decides to track down Runt and make her his again, starting off an irreversible chain of events, for good or for bad. DarrenNicknamed "Pig," he has grown up knowing no other than Runt. He cannot begin to comprehend a world where Runt does not exist. Together they created a surreal story where the line dividing reality and dreams often blurs. They will discover a castle, where Pig will be the king and Runt the queen. In the movie and play, Pig is portrayed by Cillian Murphy. SineadNicknamed "Runt," she is the more calm of the two. When things (including Pig) get too wild, Runt steps in the settle it all down.In the movie, Runt is portrayed by Elaine Cassidy.
