Plot

When Steve Clark (James Marsden
) moves with his family to Cradle Bay and enrolls in the local high school, he's not sure where he fits in with the local high school crowds. He doesn't really fit in with the punkers, the nerds, the hot-rodders, or any of the other diverse groups you would expect to find in a typical American high school. Actually, Steve looks more like one of the jocks, but they don't seem quite right either. In fact, the jock crowd seems perfect with their matching varsity jackets, perfect hair cuts, politically-correct charity work, and all-around perfect behavior that would make any mom and pop proud. When Steve befriends two of the less desirable social misfits at school, Gavin Strick (Nick Stahl
) and Rachel Wagner (Katie Holmes
), he soon discovers why the jocks' perfect behavior is so disturbing.

Gavin tries to tell Steve that there is something evil about "the blue ribbons". Steve is skeptical and thinks that they are just good kids. The next day at lunch, Gavin walks in all cleaned up and looking like a blue ribbon. Gavin slugs Steve in the stomach and walks off. Now, Steve and Rachel must try and save the rest of the school before it is too late. They find a disc that Gavin hid for them in the boiler room which tells about the club before he is taken over. Steve's parents don't believe him and set him up for an appointment to get a procedure done. Steve knows that it is the programming and runs away. They get the information and sneak into a halfway house. They find a tag which gives the location of where the programming is done. They find out that they have been turning all the bad kids into good samaritans by a hypnotic machine with deadly effects. Steve and Rachel then try and escape before they are taken over by the secret so perfect it is frightening.

Alternate Versions

DVD version features 11 deleted scenes, including an alternate ending where Gavin meets a different fate than the theatrical ending.

Alternate ending

Gavin Strick is not affected by the E-rat-acator, because he is wearing his headphones. He confronts Steve and his group on the ferry. Still a friend, Steve pleads with Gavin that that they need to get him some help. Gavin refuses on the false belief that everything helped him without the realization of the program's effects which cause him to react. He tries to shoot Steve with a shotgun and UV shoots him three times with the his own gun that Steve took away from him. As he lay dying on the ground, Gavin is out of his hypnosis to chastise a heartbroken UV while the others tend to him. Despite having survived the events that preceded them, the group is reminded that they still lost a friend in the process as everyone starts to tear up.
